Tanna Island in Vanuatu: Mount Yasur and Its Active Volcano
Mount Yasur, one of the most accessible active volcanoes anywhere, sits on the east side above ash plains and villages with strong kastom practice.
Tanna Island and Mount Yasur
Tanna Island sits at the southern end of the chain in Tafea province, and for most visitors to Vanuatu it means one thing: Mount Yasur. The volcano is the most reliable reason to leave Efate, and Tanna Island carries more visitors than any other outer island because of it.
Yasur is the reason most visitors come to Tanna. It is a stratovolcano on the east side of the island with a crater that can be reached by vehicle and a short walk, which makes it one of the most accessible active volcanoes in the world. Activity is close to continuous and varies from steam and rumbling to strombolian explosions that throw incandescent material above the rim.
Access is controlled by an alert level set by the national geohazards service. At higher levels the rim is closed, and that decision is not negotiable locally.
Ash, and the east coast
The ground around the volcano is ash — a grey-black plain crossed by tracks, with the forest resuming where the fall thins out. Port Resolution on the south-east coast takes its name from Cook's ship and is a natural harbour used by yachts crossing the region.
Kastom on Tanna
Tanna holds some of the strongest kastom practice in Vanuatu, including villages that have deliberately kept to customary law and the John Frum movement in the south-west. These are communities, not attractions, and visits are arranged through them.
Visiting
Flights from Port Vila to White Grass take under an hour. Most visitors stay one or two nights and go up to the volcano in the late afternoon so that the crater is seen in the dark.
Standing at the rim
Yasur rises about 360 metres and the crater is reached by four-wheel drive across the ash plain followed by a walk of ten to fifteen minutes. That combination — a genuinely active vent at the end of a short walk — is close to unique, and it is why Tanna carries the island tourism of the whole country on its back.
Visits are made in the late afternoon so that the descent happens in daylight and the crater is seen against a dark sky. Explosions throw incandescent bombs above the rim at intervals of minutes. The noise is the part nobody expects.
The alert level
Access is set by the Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-hazards Department on a scale of 0 to 5. At level 2 the rim itself is closed and viewing is from a distance; at higher levels the whole area is. Operators do not have discretion over this and a closure is not negotiable, whatever a trip has cost.
Kastom villages
Tanna holds some of the strongest customary practice in Vanuatu. A number of villages live explicitly by kastom law, and the John Frum movement in the south-west, which emerged in the 1930s and took its present form after the American wartime presence, still marks 15 February each year. These are communities and not attractions and are visited by arrangement.
Port Resolution
A natural harbour on the south-east coast named after Cook’s ship, which anchored here in 1774. Thermal springs vent along the shore and the bay is used by yachts crossing between Fiji and Australia. The village runs a guesthouse on the headland.
How to get there from Port Vila
How to get there is the easy part: flights from Port Vila to White Grass take about 45 minutes and run most days. Most visitors stay one or two nights. Roads on the island are unsealed and travel times are longer than distances suggest, so how to get there from the airstrip to the volcano matters more than the flight does.
Where Tanna sits in Vanuatu
Tanna is the most visited outer island in Vanuatu and the one most first-time visitors add to a week on Efate.
The volcano and the island around it
An active volcano shapes everything on Tanna Island — where gardens are sited, which roads are usable, and what the alert level permits on any given day. The volcano is not a feature of the island so much as its organising fact.
Ash as soil
Yasur deposits ash continuously downwind, and the plain to its west is effectively sterile. Upwind, the same ash weathers into unusually fertile ground, and Tanna is known across Vanuatu for its produce — particularly its coffee and its kava, which has a reputation for strength that other islands acknowledge.
Cook at Port Resolution
Cook anchored in August 1774 and named the harbour for his ship. He was given the name of the island by misunderstanding: asked what the place was called, his informants answered with a word meaning "ground". The bay has since been lifted by seismic activity, and the water Cook floated in is now partly dry land.

Common questions
How close can you get to Mount Yasur?
To the crater rim itself when the alert level allows — a short walk from where the vehicle stops. At level 2 and above the rim is closed and viewing is from a distance.
Is Mount Yasur dangerous?
It is an active volcano that throws material above the rim. The alert-level system exists precisely because the risk is real, and people have been killed there. Access decisions are not made by operators or visitors.
How long should you stay on Tanna?
Two nights covers the volcano in the late afternoon and a kastom village or Port Resolution on the other day. One night is enough only for the volcano.
What is the John Frum movement?
A movement that emerged on Tanna in the 1930s and took its present shape after the American wartime presence, centred on the figure of John Frum. It is a living religious and political movement, not a curiosity.
