Wongras Bungalow is only 100m from the only airport on Gaua Island, in the Banks Islands group. Wongras offers only simple, no frills accommodation but is perfectly situated for bush walkers wanting to see more of this magnificent island. Accommodation: The very attractive coral walled bungalows with thatched roof, has two separate rooms with a connecting balcony/dining area. There are very basic toilet and shower facilities (cold water) separate from the main bungalow. A telephone is available, but do not depend on it always working as communications can be faulty. Because Gaua is way off the beaten track, supplies are scarce and when available, expensive as they are generally flown in by relatively small aircraft. Consequently meals are based almost entirely on local garden produce - healthy but lacking in variety. There are no shops anywhere in the area so visitors are advised to treat this location as the jungle outpost that it is, and bring with you all the supplies and treats you think you will need, including beverages. The local people see few visitors and are extremely friendly and helpful. By its very nature, Wongras offer a doorway into a primitive landscape of extraordinary beauty. Tree ferns far larger than the tall coconut trees cover the jungle in a shady canopy and waterfalls about. Jungle treks to the heart of the island reveal an active volcano, Mount Garet (797m) towering over a Lake Letres, a crater lake. A canoe trip across the unusual but beautiful sulphur coloured waters brings you to the base of the volcano. The total walk time from Wongras to the volcano is about 4 hours for fit walkers. You can organise an overnight or two camping in the area to explore the volcano and spectacular jungle waterfalls. It is advisable to pre-book any trips to Wongras as only the one bungalow is available. Additionally, ORSTOM monitor the volcano's activity, however in recent years it has erupted poisonous gases and should be approached only when it is safe.
