Vanuatu's model of a National Park

Tourism at Vatthe is an alternaitve to Logging where the communities of Sara nd Matantas have agreed to give their forest for conservation. It is a set up which meets the criterai of an eco-tourism destination.

Accommodation Analysis and Tariff: 6 Melanesian style bungalows with total capacity of 12 guests. A Restaurant, deep freezer, showers and toilets. 2,150vt half double/night, 3,000vt for single supplement/night including breakfast. Meals 400vt - 2000vt for Island Night. Return transfers from Luganville 16,000 vt by bus or taxi, 1 1/2 hours driving time. Local guides 500 - 1000vt / tour.

Activities: Forest walks, Outrigger canoeing, Village Tour, coconut crab tour, garden tour, custom village tour, traditional dances and games, weaving, snorkeling, string band, plus Island Night.

Additional Information: Vatthe Conservation Area is host to more than 85% of Vanuatu birds. The 2300 ha protected virgin forest extends right down to the beach of Big Bay where Captain de'Quiros landed his ships in 1606. The famous Jordan River lies to the west. Vatthe Lodge is at the entrance of Matantas village, surrounded by tropical gardens. Excellent kitchen with plenty seasonal fruits and vegetables, fresh fish, crayfish, and also including traditional meals. All proper double rooms with mosquito nets over beds and windows.

Vatthe Conservation Lodge is owned and managed by the communities where the benefits stay with the communities.
