Nangol Bungalows are ideally located for access to a number of little known villages (by the new road and then by foot) as well as for the Naghols (Jumps) and other special ceremonies that are still prevelant in the southern part of Pentecost.

A few steps from a good swimming beach and close to clean, sparkling river deep enough to bathe in, in the village of Salap, the bungalows are 30 minutes drive from Lonorore airport along the spectacular coastal road.

They are simple but attractive with coral walls, a pandanus leaf roof and small verandah. The toilet and showers are rudimentary and shared.

There are three bungalows, each with 3 beds.

The level of luxury is not high, but you can be sure of a clean room with basic amenities. There is no electricity but kerosene lamps are provided.

Meals are prepared for you with care by the women from the village and are served in a restaurant close to the bungalows. The food is simple but fresh and plentiful. Fruit and vegetables are locally grown and thus seasonal. Picnic lunches can be prepared for full day tours. There is no bar so it is advisable to bring your own supply of drink.

A reasonable level of fitness is required as the terrain is very steep. Good walking shoes and/or boots are essential as it can be slippery in the wets season. A torch and light raincoat are useful. Tours to different ceremonies and custom dances are available throughout the year.

The Jumps only take place in April and May just before the yam harvest , when the vines are strong and elastic. The towers are built entirely of vines and branches surrounded a 'core' tree stripped of leaves. There are strict taboos observed during the construction.

The tower is usually about 30m high with a special launch platform for each jumper. Young boys (circumcised) usually start from the lower platforms and progress up the tower in following years.

The atmosphere is charged and emotional. Dancers stamp and chant to support and encourage their men jumping. A limited number of visitors are privileged to see this incredible event. Ask for details of the special jump packages.
