Pankumo River, Central Malakula
21st – 22nd August 2006

Where the Pankumo River meets the long, black sand beaches of eastern Malakula, the local communities are preparing a festival site in which to perform this important part of their living culture.  On the 21st and 22nd August 2006, there will be two days of authentic custom celebrations and feasting when the boys of these villages are welcomed back into the community as young men.

This ancient ceremony is still very much a significant milestone in the lives of the boys in Malakula, marking their transition from childhood into manhood.  Aged between 10 and 12 the boys first spend 4 to6 weeks together, kept away from family and friends, especially their mothers, in a special traditional house called a Naingodr.   During this time the boys are taught all the traditional culture and customs of their tribe, the skills that they will need as men and how they are expected to live in accordance with the principles and practices of their ancestors.

This festival traditionally marks the end of the boys’ period of incarceration when they are ready to be welcomed back into their families and presented to the community to be treated and respected as young men. You are invited to join the community to celebrate this bi-annual festival, watch the extensive preparations, learn new cooking skills and then prepare to celebrate with the boys and their families, from 3am to midnight!!!
