This amazing spectacle once drew Queen Elizabeth II to Vanuatu to visit one of human-kind’s most exotic practices which exists today. The Westernised term “Bungee-Jumping” has roots deep in the jungles of Vanuatu, filled with dignity and mystique. After tying jungle vines around their ankles, the jumper must get on a platform more than 100 feet high and throw himself off head-first. This may seem like a Hollywood movie, but in this case the man survives, and secondly, It’s Real. Legend has it that the idea behind this tradition came many centuries ago when a woman was running from her aggressive husband. He ran after her threatening to physically abuse her when suddenly the woman got to the edge of a high ledge. Needing to think quickly, she tied vines to her ankles before jumping off the ledge. The angry husband, in hot pursuit, jumped after her. The woman survived, and the husband perished. This tradition takes place yearly between April and June
when the vines are ripe and ready. It’s called “Land Diving” and hundred
of locals and honoured to take part in the tradition. Each jumper must
judge the jump precisely since it is a requirement of the ritual that his
head touches the ground. As far as a spectacle, they don’t come any more
exciting, dramatic, or real as this. Every year tourists come in from
Australia, New Zealand, USA and Europe to witness this remarkable event.
If you are thinking of visiting Vanuatu soon, now is a great time to book
your trip. See you there! Dany Girgis |
